How to Choose Your First Vibrator (Without Feeling Overwhelmed!)

 By: The Pink Tickle

So, you’re looking for your first vibrator-that’s exciting! We understand it can feel a little intimidating and overwhelming but we are here to help! Whether you are sexually reserved or ready to explore boldly, below are some helpful tips in selecting the right vibrator for you.

There are a plethora of vibrators out there in varying shapes, sizes and materials. But first, let’s break down the different types of vibrators. Overall, vibrators fall into one of two main categories; external vibrators or internal vibrators. Within each of these main categories you will have different styles of vibrators.

External vibrators will stimulate the clitoris (aka, the clit) and all external areas around the vulva. Most are small to medium size and are also great to use in other areas of the bodies like circling around the nipple area (either yourself or your partner), running it down the center of the body, tease your partner if they have a penis while giving oral stimulation.

Internal vibrators are just that, they are inserted into the vagina or anus and can provide pleasure with vibration and/or movement. Internal vibrators can also stimulate the G-spot area for those with a vulva and and the P-spot area for those with a prostate.

Below is an explanation of the different styles of vibrators to help you decide which one of these beauties is right for you.

Bullet Vibrators

Small but mighty, these are great for beginners or anyone that is a little timid or shy around sex and their bodies. Bullets are usually external vibrators, more quiet but still get the job done. Since they are small, you do not want to insert them as they can get ‘lost’ or stuck. Most are waterproof or water resistant but it’s important to read the manufacturer's guide. Most bullets have basic settings of low, medium, high vibrating intensity. For those looking to ease into using a toy, we recommend this one from Je Joue.

Wands

Wand vibrators are a classic, also known as a massager or massage vibrator. Wands range in sizes and intensity. While there are a few small wands, most will be in the medium and large range. A lot are rechargeable, some with a plug and some with batteries. Wands are external vibrators and are also great during partnered play as well as solo play. We recommend either Romp or FemmeFunn.

Clitoral

Clitoral vibrators are going to be external vibrators, specifically for the clit area. These toys either use suction or air pressure while also providing a vibrating sensation. While they come in multiple intensity levels to explore, it is recommended that you always start on the lowest setting and build your way up. Starting off on the highest setting may be too much all at once and may make you go numb. These toys are pretty specific to the clit area and aren’t quite as versatile as the bullet or wands. That said, these babies get the job done and will bring you into ecstasy like no other. Click here for a selection of clitoral vibrators.

Rabbit Style

Ahh, the rabbit. The rabbit vibrator is both an internal and external toy. The longer part of the toy is inserted, while the shorter piece (rabbit ears) sits comfortably against the clit area. This type of vibrator tends to be geared toward the more adventurous if you are just starting out with sex toys. Rabbits can vibrate and move at the same time to stimulate the G-spot and clit area at the same time. They come with multiple intensity levels and can also be used with partner play as well. These are geared toward people with a vulva. Click here for a variety to choose from.

Materials Matter

The majority of toys we carry are made from body-safe silicone material. While toys can be made from ‘jelly’ material or ABS plastic, anything that is going to be inserted inside you it’s best to use toys made of body-safe silicone. Note, some of our bullet vibraotrs are made from body-safe soft touch ABS Plastic. Since these are external toys, these are ok to use. The jelly materials and plastics are typically cheaply made and not regulated to be body safe. You typically see these on Amazon or Alibaba and we Do Not recommend anything from these sites. Shopping at specialty stores like The Pink Tickle gives you peace of mind where all toys are curated from reputable manufacturers.

Size & Power

Let’s talk about size and power in a little more detail. For those just starting out, the smaller vibrators tend to be better. They are mostly external so you can play around with them and discover what feels good, plus they are easy to use and also discreet. When you have a larger toy, like a wand, it can feel a little more intimidating and can also be a little too much ‘power’ when first starting out. Bullet vibrators are our favorite at The Pink Tickle for beginners. Click here to check out our selection.

Vibe Check

When choosing the right vibrator for you, it’s important to keep in mind where you will use it the most; the bedroom, bath, etc. For shower or tub use, definitely make sure it’s waterproof. Most vibrators these days are typically waterproof for versatility. You will also want to look at the different levels of intensity like speed and patterns. For those starting out, one with only a few select speeds is best. It’s simple to try out and you don’t get too overstimulated too quickly. This one from Dame is great.

You Have Your Toy, Now What?

Two things that are essential for using your toy is lube and toy cleaner. Lube is your friend whether it’s with a toy, fingers or penis. We recommend water-based lube as this is safe for silicone material and won't break it down. Cleaning your toy before and after use is essential. Hygienic toys, especially if used with a partner, are a must to prevent bacteria from spreading.

With vibrator in hand, go slow. There is no need to rush to get to the end. When you receive your toy, charge it first if it’s not battery operated or plugs in. It usually only takes about an hour to charge but check the manufacturer’s guide. Once your toy is ready to go, press the button to see the various settings and speed. Then get comfortable, grab some lube and put it on your toy And yourself and start to explore. It may tickle, and that’s okay! Have fun with it, explore all over your body to find what feels good to you. While it can feel embarrassing, there is No Shame with wanting to explore your sensual self. As we say at The Pink Tickle, Pleasure Begins With You.
