Condoms are one of the most accessible and effective forms of protection during sex. Whether you're preventing pregnancy, reducing the risk of STIs, or enhancing intimacy, there's a condom that fits your needs. In this guide, we’ll break down the different types of condoms for both penis and vulva owners, so you can make safer sex sexy and satisfying.
Condoms for Penis Owners: What’s Out There?
Condoms for penis owners are put into two major categories by material; latex and non-latex. Within those two categories are a multitude of options which we will dive into.
Latex Condoms
Latex condoms are the standard go-to for many and the most common. They’re stretchy, affordable, and highly effective at preventing both STIs and pregnancy. Brands like Trojan, Lelo, Durex, and Lifestyles offer many latex options.
*Best for: General use, affordability
Non-Latex Condoms
For those with latex allergies or sensitivities, non-latex condoms made from polyurethane or polyisoprene are a safe and reliable alternative. Polyurethane is a versatile polymer that has a unique combination of elasticity and durability. Polyisoprene is a synthetic polymer that is similar to natural rubber. There are also condoms that are made out of synthetic resin which give a unique barely there feeling. It’s important to keep in mind that while you may not have a latex allergy or sensitivity, your partner might.
*Best for: Latex allergies, heat-sensitive play
For both latex and non-latex condoms they come in a variety of sizes, textures, flavors and lubes. Here is a breakdown of some of the most common ones:
Lubricated Condoms
Most condoms come lubricated these days, but not always. Pre-lubricated condoms are great in helping reduce friction and increase comfort during sexual activity. You can always add more lube if needed, but caution: latex condoms need water-based lube. Non-latex condoms can use either water based, silicone or hybrid lube. *Best for: Reducing breakage, smoother experience
Ultra-Thin Condoms
There are a variety of condoms out there ranging from thin, super thin to ultra thin. These types are designed for heightened sensitivity while still offering protection. Not all thin or ultra thin condoms are the same as it really depends on manufacturer and personal preference. It’s helpful to buy a few different brands to see which ones you like the best.
*Best for: Natural-feeling sex
Textured Condoms (Ribbed & Dotted)
These condoms are engineered to enhance pleasure with raised textures like ribs, studs, or dots. This may sound uncomfortable, but keep in mind the material is soft and stretchy so consider any texture an added pleasure.
*Best for: Extra stimulation
Flavored Condoms for Oral Sex
Having a mouth full of latex doesn’t sound too appealing, but if you add some flavored lube to it, it makes it a little more fun. You can buy condoms already flavored or buy flavored lube from our shop by clicking here.
*Best for: Oral sex
Warming, Tingling, and Sensation Condoms
These specialty condoms are infused with ingredients that create warming or tingling sensations for increased excitement.
*Best for: Spicing things up
Sized Condoms: Extra-Large and Snug-Fit
One size does not fit all. When it comes to size, it’s best to fit girth rather than length. Condoms come in a range of sizes from snug, regular, and all the way to large and extra large. A good fit equals better protection and more comfort. If the girth (circumference) of your penis is above average (average erect penis being around 4.59 inches) you may want to try a larger size if the regular size feels too snug and cutting off your circulation. But if you get a larger size condom and it barely stays on or slides off, it’s too big and need to size down. The last thing you want is a condom to come off in the middle of sex leaving your partner to fish it out of their vagina or booty.
*Best for: Comfortable and secure fit
Condoms for Vulva Owners: They Exist?
Female Condoms (Internal Condoms)
Yes, condoms for vulva owners exist. These are known as female condoms but it’s for females with a vulva. These are worn inside the vagina (or anus), internal condoms (like the FC2) offer a great alternative to external condoms and give the receptive partner control over protection. These can be inserted way before intimacy occurs which saves time when you want to get down to business and don’t want to be fumbling around for a regular type condom for penises.
*Best for: Vulva owners or receptive partners seeking control
